Initial Impressions

Appearance: 90

“Sample 524 is a good looking cigar and approximately 6×50 just eyeballing it, touting a milk chocolate colored wrapper with almost invisible seams, minimal veins and a nice looking triple cap. In the hand the wrapper feels of velvet. My only complaint is that the cigar is very light in the hand. From the foot I pick up rich tobacco, some light cocoa, raisins and a brown sugar sweetness. I clipped the cap and found the cold draw to be extremely loose making me cross my fingers that post-light the cigar will tighten up. ” –Matt C. (Big Matt)

Aroma: 87

“The aroma of this cigar is really quite savory. There is a bit of rich compost buried beneath a lovely cedar note that reminds me of the finest humidor.” –Jason H. (Jokey Smurf)

First Third

Flavor: 89
Strength: Mild-Medium
Body/Complexity: Light-Medium

“The raw draw was very smooth. I detected nodes of pepper, cedar, allspice and a very rich savory aroma. The ashes are white with black striations. The ashes are solid. After letting cigar rest for 3 minutes and it did not require relaghting.” –Kevin S. (KBS1153)

“Burn is starting off nice, but I am not getting much flavors. the only thing I can detect is Hazelnut. The smoke output is nice, and not overpowering. We shall see how this progresses. ” –Mickey T. (irratebass)

Second Third

Flavor: 89
Strength: Medium
Body/Complexity: Medium

“The second portion of this cigar has progressed a bit into a sharper pepper, and a creamy note…reminds me of pepper jack cheese. I do have to be careful though to draw slowly and less frequently than normal because of the wide open draw. Too many puffs and I get some bitterness and the flavor becomes very metallic. With measured puffs, however, this isn’t a problem and the creaminess shines. ” –Jason H. (Jokey Smurf)

“Starting to get some damp wood/leave flavors. Not sure what that’s about. It’s not a bad flavor, but it’s starting to give my tongue a stinging sensation. No nut flavor anymore either. ” –Mickey T. (irratebass)

Final Third

Flavor: 89
Strength: Medium
Body/Complexity: Medium

“The flavors in the final portion have really headed toward dark and earthy. There is no more cream, and instead I’m getting peat and dark espresso. It isn’t really strong, but a good glass of scotch would set it off nicely. The finish has greatly lengthened, and is now leaving me with charcoal in the back of my throat. That I don’t like so much….in addition, the smoke is much harsher on my sinus on the exhale, forcing me to avoid the retrohale as I approach the nub.”” –Jason H. (Jokey Smurf)”

“The draw on this cigar is impeccable. The flavors of cedar, pepper, allspice and the savory richness continued. In addition to those flavors I also detected a bit of roasted coffee beans. The solid white ashes continued along wth the razor sharp burn line. ” –Kevin S. (KBS1153)

Overall Impressions

Draw: 93

“Had a very open draw with plenty of smoke in/output. ” –Mickey T. (irratebass)

Burn: 97

“Burn was great I just had to touch it up just once, but it didn’t hinder my experience. ” –Mickey T. (irratebass)

Construction: 94

“This is a very firm cigar. The wrapper was very smooth and oily. The cap was seamless. ” –Kevin S. (KBS1153)

Overall Strength: Medium
Overall Body/Complexity: Medium
Experience Overall: 94

“This was a pretty good cigar, in my opinion. It started much better than it finished, and there is a hint of a fantastic cigar here, given time to rest and mellow. I don’t think this is something I’d want to stock up on, but it’s worth another try down the road.” –Jason H. (Jokey Smurf)

“I am hoping I’m just being a curmudgeon because I really wanted to like this cigar. The profile to me never really meshed and post smoke it left my palate smashed. The cigar had some good flavors throughout all three thirds but it will not be a cigar I will reach for again. ” –Matt C. (Big Matt)

“Except for the cold this I feel would have been an excellent smoke. ” –Mickey T. (irratebass)

“This cigar was very good and enjoyable. The savoriness left me wanting more. This is one for everyone’s personal humidor. ” –Kevin S. (KBS1153)
