Blind Cigar Review: Padilla | Signature 1932 Lancero Initial Impressions

Appearance: 93

“Very attractive lancero. Pig tail cap and almost flawless wrapper. Shiny and oily and looking like it needs is a flame to the foot. ” –Adam B. (Bushboy)

Aroma: 92

“There is a very faint burnt wood aroma. Almost like an oak smell.” –Eric (smalls29)

First Third

Flavor: 91
Strength: Medium
Body/Complexity: Medium-Full

“Very earthy and woody. Flavors of coriander and a mild nutmeg. Burn line is fantastic. Perfect burn and smoke output this far. Flavors are rich, but have a short finish which make me want to dive back in for more. ” –Adam B. (Bushboy)

“The fire gets this one going right away. Lots of smoke output and flavors to start. I get some mild pepper, dark coffee, and some earthy notes right away. On the retrohale I get hints of spice. As the cigar starts to warm up I get an interesting sweetness that reminds me of Coca-Cola. ” –Matthew T. (A Huge Nerd)

Second Third

Flavor: 92
Strength: Medium
Body/Complexity: Medium-Full

“The draw is almost perfect and the smoke output is greater than the effort. Lots of spice that center around nutmeg and allspice. Slight mustiness and earthy flavors are presenting themselves, but not intrusive or unpleasant. Fantastic smoke so far with a little flavor transition. Definitely a premium smoke judging by the physical characteristics, including smoke. I expect a stronger finish and I hope it doesn’t get bitter. ” –Adam B. (Bushboy)

“The second-third has opened up a bit and has a baking spice, cedar, pepper, and just a hint of the initial citrus from the first-third. The retrohale has a light white pepper, cedar, and leather note to it that perfectly complements the main profile of the cigar. The draw has tightened up just a little bit from the previous third so I think smoking this one a bit slower than normal would really improve the experience. Generally, this is true with any lancero since they tend to be a bit more finicky than your standard vitolas. ” –Jeff (ExpendableYouth)

Final Third

Flavor: 91
Strength: Medium-Strong
Body/Complexity: Medium-Full

“The final third is also consistent, but one subtle addition does catch my attention. I notice a hint of anise flavor in the profile, on the draw and the retrohale. It actually mixes nicely with the sweet component that has been there the whole time. ” –Matthew T. (A Huge Nerd)

“At this time the strong espresso and coffee flavors are very prominent. I am anticipating the burnt oak coming back shortly. In the meantime, the aroma of a campfire have remained a nice constant.” –Eric (smalls29)

Overall Impressions

Draw: 91

“The draw was a bit finicky depending on how fast I was smoking. A good rule of thumb with lanceros is to smoke it a bit slower than you think you should. When I slowed down and took my time the draw was perfect but there was a couple times when the draw tightened up and I am not sure if it was me or the cigar itself. Overall, the cigar had a really nice draw but there was a number of times where it tightened up. ” –Jeff (ExpendableYouth)

Burn: 93

“Smaller ring cigars are tough, but this one burned ok. The ask was flaky, and the burn line was wavy. But it needed no relights or touch ups, so all things considered it was pretty good. ” –Matthew T. (A Huge Nerd)

Construction: 95

“The construction was pretty phenomenal but there was a slight crack that developed early. It burned off without incident and is my only real complaint. ” –Jeff (ExpendableYouth)

Overall Strength: Medium-Strong
Overall Body/Complexity: Medium-Full
Experience Overall: 92

“I really enjoyed this cigar. It had a lot going on in the flavor department and provided a really enjoyable experience. There were a number of flavor profile transitions that really added to the complexity and experience. I would recommend this cigar to someone looking for a nice lancero.” –Jeff (ExpendableYouth)

“This cigar had definite personality. The flavors and aroma kept trading places competing for prominence. The start was espresso and coffee with hints of an oak campfire. As time went on these flavors and aromas would take the fore front. However, near the end, a strong campfire flavor took the lead. All in all, even though the flavors never tried to outdo each other, they instead would compliment each other.” –Eric (smalls29)

“Overall this was a very enjoyable smoke. From the pigtail and oily wrapper to nub, this cigar was a treat. Definitely a stronger cigar that should be enjoyed on a full stomach. The strength built significantly throughout and offered a definitive kick towards the end. Enjoyable flavors, although they did not transition much from start to finish. I would not give this stick to a beginner, however I would love to have a few more in my humidor. I enjoyed the smoke very much and can’t wait for the reveal so I can grab a few more. ” –Adam B. (Bushboy)

“Although it wasn’t pretty, it had good flavors with some subtleness. The profile was pleasing to the palate and the nose, with a couple subtle curves along the way to keep me interested. Not a game changer, but a solid and pleasing cigar. ” –Matthew T. (A Huge Nerd)
