La Flor Dominicana Solis (Pre Release) - Blind Cigar Review

La Flor Dominicana Solis (Pre Release) – Blind Cigar Review

Cigar Info

La Flor Dominicana announced a new cigar just before PCA 2022, Solis. This new cigar is the work of Litto Gomez Jr., son of Litto Gomez and little brother to Tony Gomez, well-known figures in the company. Solis comes from the Latin word “sol” meaning sun. Litto Jr. created and and worked on La Flor Dominicana Solis slowly over the past years during his breaks from college where he spent time with his father and brother at the LFD factory in Tamboril.

This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience.

La Flor Dominicana had been in business for 6 years when Litto Jr. came into the world. After 22 years later he released his first project for La Flor Dominicana. Litto Sr. helped his son through the blending process while Tony assisted with the art to bring his brother’s vision to life. Litto Jr. said that he was inspired by his brothers work on La Nox to come up with the project.

The blend for the cigar uses a sun grown Habano wrapper, Sumatra Binder, and a blend of Dominican tobaccos from La Flor Dominicana’s farm in La Canela. Solis comes in one vitola, a 6 1/2 x 50 toro extra. Each cigar costs $12.20 and comes in boxes of 20.

Initial Impressions – La Flor Dominicana Solis (Pre Release)

Appearance: 90

“Looks to be a Toro in size which has a medium brown toothy wrapper. Lots of visible veins and seams.” –Mickey T. (irratebass)

Aroma: 94

“I’m getting the full pungent impact of barnyard off the cigar with a subtle nuttiness.” –Doug S. (Unpossible_1)

First Third
La Flor Dominicana Solis (Pre Release) – Blind Cigar Review

First Third

Flavor: 92
Strength: Medium
Body/Complexity: Medium-Full

“The cold draw greets me with raisins and wheat flavors. Right out the gate, this cigar is very smooth and creamy so far, and I’m only 1/4″ in. I get hints of chocolate, bread, and cream. Later on, decide to retro-hale and pick up sweet coffee. The strength stays mild to medium.” –Mickey T. (irratebass)

“The draw is a little light on flavor with notes of sourdough bread, baking spice, mild pepper, and stone fruit. There is a nice hit of pepper on the retrohale. The draw has a nice resistance but the smoke is a bit thin.” –Alan (Eulogy)

Second Third
La Flor Dominicana Solis (Pre Release) – Blind Cigar Review

Second Third

Flavor: 92
Strength: Medium
Body/Complexity: Medium-Full

“The second third continues with the same profile of sweet and almonds until about the halfway point. It’s at this point that new addition of cherry tart enters the fold. This really creates incredible harmony with the profile which is quite pleasing. What’s also interesting is the strength starts to build up here too. Up until this point, the cigar really sat below the radar, and now it’s easily past the medium mark.” –Doug S. (Unpossible_1)

“The middle portion of this cigar has continued with the sweet compost but deepened as well, and acquired a double espresso note that resonates really well with me. Through the nose, the smoke is sharp but not unpleasant and is a nice contrast to the sweet compost.” –Jason H. (Jokey Smurf)

Final Third
La Flor Dominicana Solis (Pre Release) – Blind Cigar Review

Final Third

Flavor: 90
Strength: Medium
Body/Complexity: Medium-Full

“Entering the last third, a bump in body and strength occurs to make this a medium-plus-bodied cigar. Syrupy sweet leather with a nuanced leathery & nutty aftertaste. The sweetness continues to build as I come to a close with this wonderful cigar.” –John A. (Bostoneo)

“Coming around the final turn, the cherry tart dominates the pack. Retro puts the red pepper and strength on full tilt like someone hit their NOS on the strip leaving Dom Toretto in the dust.” –Doug S. (Unpossible_1)

Overall Impressions – La Flor Dominicana Solis (Pre Release)

Draw: 94

“Busted out my new Colibri SV Cut and used the V cut side that resulted in the draw right where I like it.” –Doug S. (Unpossible_1)

Burn: 90

“I never needed to do any touch-ups or relights and it burned razor sharp. The ash did flake off pretty consistently with no warning creating a bit of a mess.” –Alan (Eulogy)

Construction: 94

“Excellent construction on this cigar. Plenty of smoke and the ash held on about an inch before I tapped it off.” –Mickey T. (irratebass)

Overall Strength: Medium
Overall Body/Complexity: Medium-Full
Experience Overall: 90

“Overall, this was a wonderful straight-forward cigar with a medium to medium plus body, providing wonderful notes of almonds, leather, sweetness, and some pepper here and there. A few touchups were required to the wrapper, however, overall construction and burn were on par with a premium cigar. Clocking in with a smoke time of 90 minutes, you’ll need ample time to sit down & sip on this smoke. I’d recommend trying this one out, it may become your new favorite!” –John A. (Bostoneo)

“I found it to be a sort of middling experience. The flavors didn’t really wow me at any point and the profile transition was not a positive experience for me. The cardboard note made the profile seem even dryer on the palate and I would recommend having a drink close by.” –Alan (Eulogy)

“This was a very nice smoking experience. The cigar kept my attention with plenty of cream, coffee notes, some wood, spice, cinnamon, and chocolate. The cigar performed exceedingly well. Plenty of smoke and ash. I would definitely pick up a fiver of these and would like to pair them with coffee next time.” –Mickey T. (irratebass)

“I’m a sucker for a fuller-bodied and fuller-strength cigar and this was spot on! The sweetness and pepper were a wonderful contrast and the addition of double espresso kept me totally interested. I would gladly put this in my regular rotation as a finish cigar for the day and can easily see this pairing with Barrel-aged stout or high-end bourbon. I highly recommend this to experienced smokers.” –Jason H. (Jokey Smurf)

“This cigar was a great way to end the day. It offered up a little bit of everything I could ask for today. Some sweetness, some saltiness, the spice of red pepper, and even some delicious cherry were all there for me to experience. Add that to no issues with burn, draw or construction and this was a memorable experience that I hope to revisit.” –Doug S. (Unpossible_1)
