Cigar Info
The Tatuaje Cojonu 2021 was announced at the 2021 PCA Trade Show and hit shelves September 2021. The 2021 version actually marks the 12th in the Cojonu series that started in 2003. It is one of the largest cigars made by Tatuaje being a belicoso measuring 7 x 58.
This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience.
The Cojonu line is an offshoot of Tatuaje‘s original brown label, or Selección de Cazador line. It has a secondary band a more ligero in the filler making it stronger. Each cigar in the cojonu line has a date on it, but reflects the year it came out, not a limited production. Most of the Cojonu series is ongoing, and the 2021 is no exception. Pete Johnson says that there could be other wrapper options released in the future. For now, it comes in just an Ecuadorian habano wrapper.

Initial Impressions – Tatuaje Cojonu 2021
Appearance: 88
“Honestly, it looks fantastic. It is just so large that it is daunting to smoke. It looks to be about 7×60 with a soft torpedo cap and it is heavy in the hand. The cap is huge and very well applied with a dark milk chocolate hue. The seams are mostly perfect with a few spots where they’re just a bit ruffled but considering the size is actually pretty impressive.” –Alan (Eulogy)
Aroma: 89
“It has a sweet cinnamon smell at the foot and a hay/leather smell at the cap.” –Chad M. (Chad Tchad)
First Third
Flavor: 88
Strength: Medium
Body/Complexity: Medium
“Somewhat complex profile with coffee and earth at the front. Followed by a slightly fruity note midpalate, and wood and pepper through the nose. Very balanced and smooth medium in strength.” –Ryan H. (Ryan H.)
“Initial draw had some sharp spicy black pepper notes. Then a couple more draws later sweet cocoa and cinnamon flavors come out. There is some saltiness that plays a part in the mouthfeel. Retrohale has a ton of flavor notes of dark roast coffee and black pepper spice. The spiciness at times gets caught deep in the throat. ” –Chad M. (Chad Tchad)
Second Third
Flavor: 88
Strength: Medium-Strong
Body/Complexity: Medium
“The flavors are the same as the last third but the strength has ticked up a tad. Coffee with cream, leather, baking spice, dry oak, rich tobacco, a touch of sweetness, and chocolate with a very dry mouthfeel. ” –Alan (Eulogy)
“The strength of this smoke has increased going into the 2nd third. This is a steakhouse type of smoke. It’s a thick smoking dark chocolate with hints of cinnamon. The spiciness is present and hits all parts of the tongue and continues deep into the chest as well. Retrohale is still holding strong of dark roast coffee and strong black pepper spice. ” –Chad M. (Chad Tchad)
Final Third
Flavor: 88
Strength: Medium-Strong
Body/Complexity: Medium
“Flavors are still the same but the strength has a lot more oomph compared to the first third. Baking spice, leather, cocoa, dry oak, red pepper, black coffee, and stone fruit haven’t changed but the complexity makes up for it.” –Alan (Eulogy)
“Ash is so strong, no worries about it falling in your lap ever. The cigar is very consistent. Profile only making minute changes in depths of notes. Draw and burn phenomenal. A very nice stick enjoyed every draw.” –Ryan H. (Ryan H.)
Overall Impressions – Tatuaje Cojonu 2021
Draw: 94
“Perfect draw from beginning to end.” –Sean F. (fullermaine)
Burn: 89
“Even to uneven burn depending on which part of the cigar I was enjoying. A nice grey-white ash that hung on for an inch or two. Towards the end, ash started to bend.” –Sean F. (fullermaine)
Construction: 91
“Nothing negative could be found during the inspection of the construction of the cigar. Other than the veins but as thick as the wrapper is you are going to expect a vein or two.” –Ryan H. (Ryan H.)
Overall Strength: Medium-Strong
Overall Body/Complexity: Medium
Experience Overall: 91
“The flavors are complex even though there are no real profile transitions. It is really the size that is a problem for me. It is somewhat uncomfortable to smoke due to the size but the torpedo shape does help a little bit. It is a very good cigar but blocks out a serious amount of time since it will take hours to smoke. ” –Alan (Eulogy)
“Bitter cigar that mellowed out towards the end. Notes of cherry, oak, bitter walnut, bitter tea, and chocolate. Veiny construction with an odd burn. Even uneven in spots. Bent grey-white ash that hangs on the cigar of an inch or two.” –Sean F. (fullermaine)
“This is one awesome cigar. Taste great very relaxing draw and burns excellent. Well worth a box purchase.” –Ryan H. (Ryan H.)
“This was a big cigar and a long smoke. The flavors were consistent the whole time. It was dark cocoa, cinnamon, and mild noted of salty nutty flavors. Strong black pepper that was intense at times and went deep into the chest. This is a steakhouse cigar. I would l make sure you eat a big meal and have a 4-6 finger pour of bourbon when smoking this one.” –Chad M. (Chad Tchad)
