Cigar Info
Earlier this year, in July, Davidoff announced an addition to the AVO Syncro series, AVO Syncro Caribe. The last cigar added to the Syncro line was the AVO Syncro South America Ritmo in 2017. Before that came the Syncro Nicaragua Fogata in 2016, and the original AVO Syncro Nicaragua in 2015.
This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience.
AVO Syncro Caribe comes in 20-count boxes in three sizes: Robusto 5 x 50 $10.90, Toro 6 x 52 $11.90, and Special Toro 6 x 60 $12.90. The name Caribe comes from the inspiration of the flavors, the Caribbean. AVE Syncro Caribe was blended with a process Davidoff calls ‘Natural Distribution.’ This means that the ratios of tobacco primings are kept the same in all the sizes, and those ratios are equal to how they are distributed on the plat they were harvested from. For example, if the tobacco plant had 40% seco, 40% viso, and 20% ligero, that is how the blend would be. The blend starts with a Dominican wrapper, then an Ecuadorian binder, and finishes with fillers from the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua.

Initial Impressions – AVO Syncro Caribe Toro
Appearance: 90
“Toothy wrapper reminds me of an old worn leather saddlebag, complete with characteristic blemishes throughout.” –Doug S. (Unpossible_1)
Aroma: 89
“I get powdered cocoa on the body, like when I was a kid and my mom made me hot chocolate, and it came in this can. I always loved the smell of that when she would open it. The foot gives me manure with cinnamon and coffee. ” –Mickey T. (irratebass)
First Third
Flavor: 85
Strength: Medium
Body/Complexity: Medium
“I get salt and rye flavors on the cold draw. As the ash falls off I am tasting raisins, sweet coffee, and some earth tones. This is a pretty strong cigar right out of the gate not in spice terms, but in earthiness.” –Mickey T. (irratebass)
“The flavor starts out very bold with dry notes of leather and bitter walnuts that are slightly dry on the palate. Sour bread notes and white pepper begin to develop with a dry cedar finish. The retrohale is a very crisp rich note of leather and red pepper. This is probably the truest note of leather I have found in a cigar in a long time. ” –Alan (Eulogy)
Second Third
Flavor: 88
Strength: Medium
Body/Complexity: Medium
“Moving into the second third we are now at a medium-full bodied smoke with an equal amount of strength. Salted chocolate, leather, and a cedar-rich aftertaste linger on the tongue. As I come to an end of this third, this sample moves into the full-bodied territory.” –John A. (Bostoneo)
“After another ash tap, I got a mouthful of cream (I hear ya laughing with your perverted thoughts). The earthiness is still there, but it is subtle and not so much in my face (like the cream lol’s)…..and just like that the roasted nuts have arrived. On the retro I got some banana flavors. The strength did lighten up a bot from a medium-strong to just a medium.” –Mickey T. (irratebass)
Final Third
Flavor: 85
Strength: Medium
Body/Complexity: Medium
“Biggest change from the previous two-thirds is the amount of sweetness from the cedar. There’s a bit more heat from the pepper, rich notes of leather, cream, bread, and a nice slightly sour note. ” –Alan (Eulogy)
“With the last third upon me, the full-bodied experience continues to build in strength. Flavors of molasses, black pepper, and strong leather are ever-present. This syrupy mouthful of black pepper, leather, and sweet molasses continues well towards the end where the profile becomes a muddled mixture of very strong and overwhelming char. Time to sit this one down for the count.” –John A. (Bostoneo)
Overall Impressions – AVO Syncro Caribe Toro
Draw: 92
“Nice draw with my straight cut I got a bot of resistance. ” –Mickey T. (irratebass)
Burn: 94
“Burn held up quite well the entire time. Even with no touch-ups needed. This really is the highlight of the cigar…so hurray for that.” –Doug S. (Unpossible_1)
Construction: 91
“It is not the prettiest cigar I have seen with a lot of raised edges and a slightly sloppy cap. Other than that it was a perfect nice solid body with no soft spots, great draw, and sharp burn. ” –Alan (Eulogy)
Overall Strength: Medium
Overall Body/Complexity: Medium
Experience Overall: 85
“This was not a bad cigar. It started out with a lot of Earth & dirt notes that turned me off immediately, but I continued on and was glad I did because the earthiness subsided and I got cream, some banana, and roasted nuts. Unfortunately, it was too cold to continue on, but I would be glad to smoke this again and give it another shot. ” –Mickey T. (irratebass)
“Probably one the best cigars that I’ve had this year. I was totally engaged with the flavor profile changes and the richness of the notes the entire time. The smoke output was amazing with a creamy lingering smoke on the palate. It smokes special and even at a higher price, it would be worth having a few on hand for the right occasion. ” –Alan (Eulogy)
“Overall, this was a fantastic cigar while the profile remained enjoyable until the last two inches, where the cigar became overwhelming in body. Impeccable construction, burn, and draw combined with a fantastic flavor profile, made this a no-brainer to smoke again to see if it is truly box-worthy. Try this out, I am sure a majority of people who enjoy medium to full-bodied smokes will love this one!” –John A. (Bostoneo)
“Such a light-bodied cigar, I really struggled to get into it. I prefer a little more in my cigars and it just wasn’t happening here. Maybe you prefer the subtle things in life. If that’s the case, check this one out. Otherwise, I’d be hard-pressed recommending it. ” –Doug S. (Unpossible_1)
