Towards the beginning of 2022, Southern Draw announced a new cigar line that would take its lead from input from their 10,000 most loyal consumers, retail partners, and media members. The Southern Draw Peccadilloes line uses crowed sourced feedback to decide on the company’s next regular production cigar for 2023. The motto behind this project is, “we hear you; we trust you and we are open to your opinions.” Each participant receives a pack of 4 cigars, or Peccadilloes. These unreleased blends are to be smoked and rated via the Southern Draw QR code portal. Previously we reviewed the Peccadilloes No. 8 Laurel and Peccadilloes #7 Mettle. Now we are reviewing the Southern Draw Peccadilloes No. 11 Hyacinth.

PECCADILLOES – “Small Sins” – Over the last 10 – 20 years, for one reason or another, many of our favorite thin or “small” ring gauge cigars, specifically 38 – 46/100ths of an inch in diameter, have vanished from the market. Sure, we enjoy the larger cigars; however, we take a step back in time, honoring tradition and applaud the highly skilled hands that deliver our most consistent smoking experiences, refined skills required to produce some classic small sizes. This opportunity is for those that don’t always demand larger and more powerful, we are returning a focus to the quality of the smoking experience over cost or image. Southern Draw Cigars has kept a secret for years. That secret being the existence of a variety of blends, each has been skillfully rolled in small ring gauges, their purest form. Withholding the existence of these for so long as we grew our brand, we have adopted a project name using the Spanish term Peccadilloes, which translates in English to “Small Sins”.

The blends for each of these four cigars is undisclosed. 10,000 of the 4-packs were created and sent to gather feedback. All 4 of the cigars in the pack are rolled in the same 6 x 42 corona size. The are all made at Tabacalera AJ Fernandez de Nicaragua, SA, in Estelí, Nicaragua. The company says the packs are sold at cost, or about $20.00, meaning each cigar is about $5.00. The final blend will cost more.

“Smaller ring gauge cigar with tan to light brown wrapper there is lots of visible veins and tight visible seams. Appears to be a double cap.” –Angel M. (Angel)

“Very light aroma off the wrapper, hay, bread, and a hint of something floral. Spinach and natural tobacco off the foot.” –Chris M. (Chris)

First Third

“Right off the bat during the beginning of the first third lots of pepper spice plenty of tingle on the lips and tongue, the pepper remains on the tongue and back of the throat all the way to the next draw it has a long finish. So far, a very woodsy cigar, picking up cedar and cinnamon not too much sweetness. I wouldn’t call the smoke dry or creamy, it lands right about in the middle. In each draw, there is a lot of smoke output. I’d say this cigar is on the milder side. So far starting off very well.” –Angel M. (Angel)

“Cream, confectioners sugar, and a light roast coffee up top. Cedar has smoothed out some, with the citrus now attached to it. There is now spiced nut bread at a moderate level. Retrohaling elevates the cream, and is now the only source of black pepper.” –Chris M. (Chris)

“Going into the second third, flawless performance so far. Ash is holding at 2” in and is a mix of mainly gray, but some white ash. Flavors are steady and consistent with the first third. Ash fell when the cigar rolled off the table when I went in for sunglasses. Geez. No damage though. It’s a straight Connie cigar with no definitive excitement flavor-wise, but it’s still good, and performing flawlessly.” –Randy B. (randobush)

“Cedar really starts to pick up, dominating on some draws. Coffee is back to cream heavy and sweet. Nut bread shifts to a less pronounced spice cake. Black pepper back on the draw, though just above the background to start. It does pick up near the nub.” –Chris M. (Chris)
