Rocky Patel Sixty was released in 2021 to celebrate the 60th birthday the brand’s creator, Rocky Patel. His birthday was on Feb. 26, 2021. The blend for Sixty uses a Mexican San Andrés wrapper, with Nicaraguan binder and fillers. The cigars are said to have been aged for two years after being rolled before being put on shelves. The line comes in three sizes: Toro 6 1/2 x 52 $17.00, Sixty 6 x 60 $18.00, and Robusto 5 1/2 x 50 $16.00. All come in boxes of 20.

The Rocky Patel Sixty is not the only cigar his company has made to celebrate a birthday. The Rocky Patel II-XXVI came out in 2013 and celebrates Rocky’s birthday in Roman numerals 2-26, meaning February 26th. The Rocky Patel 50 and Rocky Patel Fifty-Five also celebrated his birthdays. The Rocky Patel Sixty Toro is also offered in a special humidor, with 100 cigars and sells for $2,500.

Initial Impressions – Rocky Patel Sixty Toro

Appearance: 91

“This big boy looks to be 6.25” by 52, maybe even 54 as it it has a rectangular press. The wrapper shade is a nice mottled dark brown, almost dry looking. There are a few large veins, some small blemishes, and a bit of an uneven press, but the double cap is well laid and should make for an easy cut.” –Chris M. (Chris)

First Third

Flavor: 89

“After a very bold dark chocolate and black pepper start, it mellows to medium and adds to the flavors. Burnt caramel, cream, dry earth and a slight musty wood mingle in. The earth and cream up top by a half inch in, with dark chocolate taking a dive to the background. A bit of citrus peel off and on coming up on the second third.” –Chris M. (Chris)

“With a draw on the tighter side, I had to work a little more than I would have liked to for a mouthful of smoke. The hard work paid off however and I was rewarded out of the gate with an exquisitely dynamic and balanced smoke. The initial puffs brought it all to the table. An earthy richness with flavors of strong black coffee kicked it off. The bitterness of the coffee notes gave way to a long drawn-out finish that was creamy and introduced subtleties of dark Mexican chocolate that hit my palate with a lingering spicy and sweet combo. The complexity was further rounded out by a smooth and pleasantly spicy retro, with more baking spice than pepper. The first third closed out with a nice mild buzz.” –Noah S. (Noah)

“Going into the second third the sweet tobacco still dominates, and I am not picking up any more cedar. However, the cocoa remains, and a bit of a leathery flavor has joined in. The pepper tangle still exists. However, I can’t necessarily taste the pepper. The smoke still remains right between dry and smooth resulting in a bit of dryness on the tongue, as for the temperature it still remains cool, on the retro hail there is a tiny little burn. So far, I’m definitely enjoying this cigar.” –Angel M. (Angel)

“The black coffee bitterness prevalent in the beginning dropped back and gave way to notes more common of a rich creamy espresso entering the second third. The uptick in creaminess yielded the same long finish that became nuttier and noticeably less sweet and spicy, although that duo continued to dance in and out of the background. Flavors of cashew were dominant on the finish. The retrohale dropped off a bit with regards to intensity but it still brought the subtleties of baking spice that kept the smoke pleasantly complex and interesting.” –Noah S. (Noah)

“Going into the final third, not too much of a flavor transition, the sweet tobacco, leather, and cocoa all kind of balanced out evenly. No more pepper tingle or pepper flavor is being detected. The smoke itself remains once again, right in the middle of creamy and dry and the temperature remains cool. There is a little bit of bitterness on the tongue, but nothing off-putting or distracting.” –Angel M. (Angel)

“Vanilla blends with the cream up top, earth, and musty wood still match it. The citrus peel drops on the draw but grows through the finish. A moderate, lasting black pepper and cayenne spice is laced throughout, with very dry cocoa at the back. Coming up on the nub, and the earth starts to wash everything out.” –Chris M. (Chris)

“Overall, I feel this was a great cigar. The sweet tobacco, cocoa, and leather dominated throughout the cigar with just changes in their balance between each third. The cedar and black pepper in the first and second third were very enjoyable, and then the final third, with all the remaining flavors balancing to almost an equal proportion, made for good flavors. I would definitely smoke this cigar again and recommend it to individuals with a more robust palate. I feel the cigar would go well with, an espresso or French roast type coffee, or a Porter/Stout style beer. Of course, a nice bourbon would also complement the cigar very well.” –Angel M. (Angel)

“Very spicy cigar from beginning to end. The only exception was on the cold draw, which has sweet tea notes. The spicy notes include notes of cinnamon, jalapeno, and black pepper, and licorice. Veiny construction and hard spots that don’t hinder the pleasure. Good draw and burn. Very strong grey-white ash that hangs on for half of the cigar. “I am not a fan of cigars that need a lot of work. The burn corrections alone dropped my urge to give it a purchase for a second shot. The flavors were a little consistent for such a long-burning cigar, but they were far from bad. Very smooth, medium-bodied, earthy, but well balanced. “Beyond the nuisance of a tight draw and very minor burn issues, this stick was nothing short of superb and it checked off all of the boxes for me. Not only did this cigar showcase an abundance of flavors that were rich and robust from the first puff to the last, but the flavors were also balanced and ultimately smooth throughout. Although the transitions were few and slight, the overall complexity as well as the ebb and flow of certain flavors kept my palate intrigued for the entire smoke. In fact, because the flavors were so well suited for my palate I was pleased that there were not a ton of transitions.
