Neil Garcia and Gerard Abajian launched Jake Wyatt Cigar Co. back in February of 2020. The company name comes from the two co-owners' sons names. Abajian's father started Madro Cigars in California over 30 years ago. The passing of his father 6 years ago lead to his journey toward making his own cigars. Mardo Cigars currently operates in Laguna Niguel CA and Sarasota, FL. The company debuted with 6 lines at launch, 5 regular production and 1 limited edition. Most of the company's lines feature wrapper with very intricate details and accents with two wrapper types making them stand out. All are rolled at Tabacalera JVM in Tamboril, Dominican Republic. Fourth Dimension, Herbert Spencer, Appendix II, Lucid Interval, U.S.I.R., were the regular production launch lines. S.E. 2019 was the company limited edition. The Lithium line was later added in 2020 as another Limited Edition cigar. The Jake Wyatt Appendix II is what we will be taking a look at today.

The Jake Wyatt Cigar Co. line names take their inspiration from the founders' history in sports, literature, and philosophy.The Jake Wyatt Appendix II “hits at the heart of our existence.” The name comes from the place where Herbert Spencer, and English Philosopher, published a famous quote that inspired another one of their lines. “There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is proof against all argument, and which cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance. This principle is, contempt prior to examination.” “In other words,” Garcia said, “don't knock something until you try it.” The company says this has been a significant influence in the lives of the company's co-founders.

Jake Wyatt Appendix II uses an Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper with Mexican San Andrés Maduro accents, with Dominican binder and fillers. It comes in 5 sizes, Robusto (5 x 50) – $10.52, Toro (6 x 54) – $11.80, Belicoso (6 x 52) – $11.80, Gordo (6 x 60) – $12.56, and L.E. Figurado (7 x 49/64) – $26.00.

Initial Impressions – Jake Wyatt Appendix II Robusto

Appearance: 93

“Looks like a Robusto FINALLY!!!!! This is a cool-looking cigar. It's a barber style, but not really. The main wrapper looks to be a Colorado color along with maybe some Habano or Sumatra wrappers. The said wrapper wraps around the head maybe two times then comes to a circle at the end (see pic for reference) then at the foot there are 3 rings but no circle at the end.” –Mickey T. (irratebass)

“Light medium in strength. Very muddy and creamy. Cream and hay set in with just a detectable amount of spice. Very balanced and good. Cream and pepper now the most of the profile. Sweet hay just barely there. Very simple but very enjoyable cigar.” –Ryan H. (Ryan H.)

“Let's light up! Upon breaking into the cigar sweet notes stack on top of an intense leathery and minor corn notes, mild-medium bodied profile. Moving past the initial burn in period, this cigar develops a tasty roasted pepper aspect to it as a more cedar like presence builds on the back end of this third.” –John A. (Bostoneo)

“Some of the sourness has toned down from the first third. The draw is still too tight and smoke output is still very thin. The only real addition in terms of flavor is a bit of leather is coming through now. Still, it is mostly a mineral heavy blend with milder notes of pepper, hay, and grass. ” –Alan (Eulogy)

“I'm mostly getting a sour, salty, mineral profile with a thin body. A slightly metallic flavor is starting to develop but that may just be the mineral note evolving. There's still a mild amount of pepper, vegetal note, and grassy finish. ” –Alan (Eulogy)

“It's very impressive to look at and certainly a conversation piece but the flavors are just out of my wheelhouse. The sour, mineral flavors were pretty constant and there was an almost complete lack of strength with made it feel a bit flat.” –Alan (Eulogy)

“Man I really wanted to like this cigar. I looked forward to smoking this as soon as I received it. It is just so cool looking, I'm a sucker for gimmicks. Sadly the only flavors were in the beginning with the darker wrappers. Maybe it should have been a barber pole style then at least there would have been some flavor to this cigar and keep the smoker on their toes. “While not the most complex cigar, it was mighty tasty for the flavors it gave, never becoming sour, even at the end. The artwork on the cigar itself was very appealing and a nice change of pace from the norm, giving it a special feeling and anxiousness to light it up and smoke it!
