The magazine also features cigar reviews and ratings submitted by real smokers. has just published a Cigars 101 guide by Executive Editor Gary Korb, on how to build a coolerdor.

“Though most premium cigar-smokers would argue that nothing beats a traditional, handcrafted humidor for storing cigars,” Korb writes, “the ‘Coolerdor' has become one of the most popular containers for this purpose. “

He recognizes many factors for their use: one reason is cost. A Coolerdor costs a lot less than a traditional humidor, especially if a person needs a space to sustain at least 100 cigars or more. Secondly, avid cigar smokers tend to be collectors, which means their stash can grow exponentially, easily exceeding the capacity of their regular humidor(s). For this reason the Coolerdor is the most economical way to store an overflow of cigars, especially when they're bought by the box.

A Coolerdor provides plenty of room, good insulation, and when a humidifier and a hygrometer are added, it's like a mini cigar warehouse to pull from when smoking through humidor-housed cigars. Another advantage to making a coolerdor is that it doesn't need to be seasoned, which can take days with a traditional humidor.

All that is needed besides the tub is a large humidifier, a digital hygrometer, and some distilled water. If the bin is being used for both boxes and loose cigars, an electronic humidifier may be in order, since it has a fan for circulating the air.

Korb notes, “It may not be as pretty as a traditional box, but if done right, cigars stored in a coolerdor will remain just as fresh.”
