Blind Cigar Review: Hoyo de Monterrey (Cuba) | Epicure No. 1

"I loved the flavor profile present, really up my alley, and it was complex with a nice bit of depth. There was some transitioning throughout, but it kept this core flavor profile as well that really changed up in thirds. I loved the body and strength present with the cigar and it made for a great evening smoke. I am a big fan of cigars in this size, corona gorda area, and they perform incredibly well when constructed correctly. This will only get better with age, and if it did not have some age on it right now, I would be surprised. "This was a very good cigar, especially the first two thirds. If the last third hadn't gotten dry and a little bitter, it would have scored higher. The flavors were not in your face, but quite complex. I liked the transitions it offered and kept me entertained. I would definitely smoke more of these, and I would like to see if the final third was the same in all samples. Not my favorite Cuban, but a solid stick." -Emmett (rhetorik)

"This smoke was right in my flavor wheelhouse. I enjoyed the mild and creamy start more than the darker finish, and the mid point was a perfect balance of the two. The cigar evolved enough to keep me interested, though never straying too far from its core flavor base. "The first two thirds of this cigar are some of the best and most complex you can find in a full body smoke. Burn, draw and construction are all top notch and the cigar is very well made. Unfortunately, the finish becomes unbalanced and slightly bitter in the final third. This can be a product of age and letting this cigar sit for a few months or so will rid the final third of this bitter note. I could buy 10 or so of this cigar and it will hit the mark when I am looking for a full body smoke. "This is a fantastic cigar with well balanced flavors and a smooth rich texture. The sweet notes in this cigar range from honey, to caramel, to a vanilla cream, which really makes the cigar come to life. These sweet notes pair well with hearty tobacco and oak notes. Construction is top notch and the draw evens out into a smooth draw with just enough resistance. This cigar may be a bit too much for beginners, but it is a necessity for experienced cigar enthusiasts. This was an amazing cigar experience and I could easily put this cigar into my regular smoking rotation. Once I know what this cigar is, I am going to hunt down a box." -Dave (Cigar Jukebox)

"This was an interesting cigar with several flavor changes. In fact, it started almost opposite of how it finished, beginning with light flavors, and ending with a deep, dark earth/espresso bouquet. I noted just a bit of nicotine strength, but not too much, making it OK for the adventurous beginner. This is probably not a daily smoke for me, but not something I'd run away from." -Jason H.
